Sequoia Stamp Club’s WPL Auction

Stuart Leven, Chairman of the Friends of the WPL

Stuart Leven, Chairman of the Friends of the WPL

The May 14th meeting of the Sequoia Stamp Club was devoted to an auction of material from the archives of the Western Philatelic Library (WPL). The WPL, was founded as the South Bay Philatelic Library in 1969.  It  was recently forced by the City of Sunnyvale to vacate its long-time home in Sunnyvale’s Raynor Activity Center, and is in the process of moving its holdings to a new building at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Spring Street in Redwood City. Stuart Leven, Chairman of the Friends of the WPL, opened the auction period with a short talk about the library and it’s move.

Sequoia Club member Wally Joliff

Following the usual break to inspect the lots up for auction, Sequoia Club member Wally Joliff conducted the auction of some 60 varied lots. Livening up the bidding was Wally’s cheerful rejection of an underbid from a club member who was after a really good bargain, and a lot from Equatorial Guinea which Wally forecast might soon be recognized by Scott’s, an action sure to produce an increase in value. Who knew that you could get investment tips at your local stamp club meeting! The 60 lots in this first of an expected two WPL auctions to be held under the auspices of the Sequoia Stamp Club brought in about $1000 for the Library.

The library will photocopy Piper File references on your topic, so you can select appropriate periodical articles. Request books and articles right from the catalog using the cart feature.

Fountain of Youth

by: Darlene Hickok, Youth Committee Co-Chair

youthstampThe Youth Group is alive and very well! We added two new Committee members, Steve Sexton and his son, Andrew, who brings a youth perspective. We met on February 19th and prepared five (5) mailings, so no meeting is required until August. Financially, we benefited from a donation that netted Youth $315 and our chief salesman, Richard Coleman has added $100+ since January 1! Hank Shoolman provided 8,000 newer stamps to provide variety which were completely used up at the meeting. Boxes were purchased and have arrived for use by LeRoy Bertsch for his projects at the Children’s Hospital. These were purchased with some of the grant money that LeRoy’s project won. Come join us to see a functioning committee at work (we’ll let you know when the August tryst will be held). We would also like to congratulate Brian Jones for receiving the Nicholas G. Carter Volunteer Recognition award from the APS. Brian has worked with our Stamps R Us Youth Program during PENPEX shows to arrange Merit Badge workshops for Boy Scouts in the Bay Area. His follow up activities throughout the year do a lot to keep the youngsters interested in stamp collecting.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Influence on Stamp Collecting

by Marsha Brandsdorfer

rooseveltFranklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) began his interest in stamps when he was nine years old and would continue collecting into his adult years. Before FDR ran for the position of the Governor of New York, stamp collecting had been perceived by most as a child’s hobby. His interest in stamp collecting received media attention, giving new respect to the hobby. With FDR’s interest in stamps known, when he was the President (1933 to 1945) he was asked to approve government proofs for all future stamps before they were issued. He personally approved every U.S. stamp that was issued during his twelve years in office.

airmailOn May 14, 1938, the Post Office Department released a single blue and carmine airline stamp featuring an eagle which was taken from a sketch made by the President, (Scott C23). Another eight designs would also originate from sketches by FDR, including: Little America commemorate (733); Mother’s Day, (737-738); Susan B. Anthony (784); Virginia Dare Commemorate (796); Statehood commemorative (858); and the Defense Trio of 1940 (899-901).

Prior to 1938, there was a law that made it illegal to reproduce a photograph of any U.S. stamp in its entirety as the Treasury Department felt it was needed to prevent counterfeiters. Finally in 1938, a bill was passed by Congress allowing for reproduction of stamps, but with some r

estrictions. One restriction was that stamps could only be published in black and white. However, having reproductions of stamps could assist collectors as publishers could print reproductions in albums to help collectors with their placement of stamps into the albums. This was the only time FDR had legislative influence on his hobby. However, during his presidency, post office revenue soared because FDR made stamp collecting so appealing to the public. The President’s interest in stamps inspired many new collectors: adults and a new generation of children.

As FDR was a busy man, he did not have as much time to devote to his collection as he would have liked. However, he would spend at least a half hour every evening before retiring to enjoy his stamps. It helped him relax from the stress of his Presidential duties. FDR would also encourage the bedridden and wounded servicemen to participate in stamp collecting to help them get their minds off their troubles. FDR is memorialized on multiple U.S. and foreign stamps, and covers bearing cachets of his likeness. My research was taken from Brian C. Baur’s informative 1999 book published by Linn’s Stamp News, entitled Franklin D. Roosevelt: the Stamp-Collecting President.

Sequoia Club President’s Message, April 2013

For Sequoia, 2013 is off to a great start! The Treasurer’s (Richard Griffone’s) report indicated that we have never been financially healthier, Gil Goodrich (Program Chair) is reaching out to presenters of interest and Youth met in February to prepare five mailings (won’t have another meeting until August)! Leroy Harbaugh notes that all catalogs are accounted for, and Kristin’s mentoring was well received. Sales books are up (Jim Mosso) as is membership (120). We have a father and son member team with Steve and Andrew Sexton. In short, we are functioning as a well-oiled machine, probably the finest in Northern California.

We are reaching out to Western Philatelic Library with an auction May 14, as passed by the Board of Governors on 26 February. That was a most spirited meeting with many points of view expressed on a variety of issues, so many that we neglected some of the agenda because of time constraints. My goals remain the same: a better Club with more benefits in members’ pockets. Please join me in achieving those goals!

Respectfully submitted,
Hank Shoolman

In Memory of William R. Moll (1914-2013)

Bill Moll, honored guest and oldest living member of Sequoia Stamp Club

Bill Moll, was the honored  guest at the 65th Anniversary Celebration at the Sequoia Stamp Club last year. Here he receives a copy of the yearbook from Paul Swierstra, club archivist.

Bill Moll, the last living charter member of the Sequoia Stamp Club, passed away at the Olive Ridge Care Center in Oroville, CA on January 24, 2013 due to complications from pneumonia. He was 98 years of age.

Bill was born in San Francisco on July 12, 1914, and moved to Redwood City with his wife Marie in 1941, where they raised their four children. He and several other local stamp collectors founded the Sequoia Stamp Club in 1947 at Redwood City Fire House #2. He held membership number 9 and served as club president in 1969. Along with being a long time stamp, coin, and postcard collector and dealer, Bill was an avid golfer and at 81 was golfing his age.

He will be remembered for the loving care and attention that he gave to his wife during her long illness. Marie preceded him in death after 64 years of marriage; she passed away in April of 2005. Bill is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Kelly and Beverly Colgin, his two sons William, Jr. and Robert, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. In addition, Bill leaves many other loving family members and friends, including members of the Sequoia Stamp Club. Last September, we were very fortunate that Bill was able to attend our 65th Anniversary celebration, where he was the honored guest.

Bill and Marie will have their combined ashes scattered. A reception to honor their lives will be held in the spring. Memorial donations may be made to the non-profit Operation SAFE, P. O. Box 266, Dunlop, IL 61525, a spay/neuter organization founded by the granddaughter, Tracy McNaught.

President’s Message

Past President’s Message:
This is my final message as Sequoia Stamp Club president. I will bepassing the leadership torch to our newly elected President Hank Shoolman, but I will continue my duties with publicity, donations/sales, and publication of the Chatter newsletter. I want to thank my fellow officers and all Sequoia Club members for their support throughout my two years as president. We have accomplished a lot, including expanding membership and maintaining a solid financial base. We have had excellent programs, exciting stamp auctions, and lively social events, highlighted by our 65th anniversary party. The Sequoia Stamp Club is fortunate to have both older members who provide valuable experience and newer members who bring enthusiasm and fresh ideas. With everyone working together for the good of the club, I anticipate that our club will continue to thrive in the years ahead.

Incoming President’s Message:
It is with great hope and optimism that I welcome Vice President Steve Sexton, the remaining Governing Board and members to Sequoia-2013. 2012 saw an increase in membership of the Club, more Youths, the modernization of our bylaws and a good stamp show (PENPEX) despite inclement weather.
My goal is two-fold: Growth of the Club and More Money in Members’ Pockets! As VP, for two years I just listened while Treasurer Richard Griffone exhorted us to spend more, but nothing was done directly for Sequoia or Sequoians. Well, ladies and gentlemen, the talk is ceasing and action is commencing January 8 at our first meeting. I hope one and all had a fine and safe Holiday Season. Remember: Every day is a gift. Use it wisely!

Joe DiMaggio Cachet

Joe Dimaggio Cachet

Available for purchase at PENPEX will be our Joe DiMaggio cachet.  Joe was one of 4 all-star legends featured this past year by the USPS.

The stamps were designed by artist-illustrator Kadir Nelson of Los Angeles and are based on historic photographs. Phil Jordan of Falls Church, VA, served as art director.

Joe DiMaggio

Joe DiMaggio (1914-1999) was admired for his skill and grace as a fielder and base runner. The Yankee Clipper is best known for his incredible 56-game hitting streak in 1941—the season of “The Streak.” DiMaggio led the New York Yankees to ten pennants and nine World Series titles.

United Nations Postal Administration will not be at PENPEX 2012

The United Nations Postal Administration will not be at PENPEX 2012. Rick Richardson has been the UN rep at PENPEX for over 20 years, but has retired due to health issues.

Rick, a life member of Sequoia Stamp Club, has been a SSC member since 1992. In the late 1980s, he became a UN rep at many Bay Area stamp shows and sold all UNPA stamps which came in three different currencies; U.S. dollars, Swiss francs, and Euro. The stamps are valid for postage when used on mail from the UN offices in New York, Geneva, and Vienna.

PENPEX has looked for a replacement UN rep, but none are currently serving the Bay Area. But when one door closes another opens and in this case PENPEX has a new dealer who has never been to PENPEX before.
