In September of 1947, a small group of enthusiastic stamp collectors met in Redwood City's Fire House No. 2, to form the Sequoia Stamp Club. Mounting interest in philately and stimulating club programs have occasioned a growth to a present membership of about 70 individuals.
With the increased roster, the craft room of the Fire House bulged at it's seams, and in April 1950, it became necessary to transfer the club meetings and events to the YMCA building on Brewster Avenue in Redwood City. Then in 1956, the construction of the YMCA building on Hudson Street provided even better facilities, which further enhanced the activities of the club.
With the increased activities at the YMCA as well as continuing growth of the club, another move was required. In January of 1962, the club began meeting in the Friendship Room of the American Savings and Loan Company on Woodside Road. Excellent lighting and spaciousness made this a satisfactory meeting place. There was one drawback, it was a second story location, and some of the older members found climbing stairs too difficult. In January of 1966, the club moved to the Veteran's Memorial Building on Madison Avenue, the scene of several PENPEX exhibitions.
Continued growth again dictated a move. In January of 1967, the club moved to the just completed Community Activity Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue in Redwood City, where it is comfortably settled and hopes to continue to meet for a long time. The members have always enjoyed a well rounded philatelic program including exhibitions, discussions, lectures, slide show, speakers, etc., and annual events, such as, Summer Picnic and Holiday Parties. Let us also not forget the trading, penny boxes, spot sales, and the annual Big Sale.
This inherent interest and enterprise of philatelists, as well as a demonstrated spirit of cooperation amongst members, has resulted in making the Sequoia Stamp Club one of the liveliest stamp clubs on the Peninsula.
The club also stages the PENPEX Stamp Show, held annually at the Redwood City Community Center, the first weekend in December.
